How to Become a Freelance Writer

February 6, 2021 by Rachel

Are you looking for a work at home job that is flexible and allows you to make the most of your writing skills? You may want to learn how to become a freelance writer. There is great income potential for freelance writers and you’ll be able to set your own hours and focus on topics that interest you.

This post contains affiliate links.

Freelance writing can be a very profitable side gig or a full-time work at home job. Freelance writers can focus on an endless number of topics, so you can focus on an area that is interesting to you. It can be very rewarding and allow you to create a steady remote income.

There are many options for paid remote work as a freelance writer. Some options include:

  • Copywriting for websites
  • Writing marketing materials for small business
  • Content writing
  • Ghostwriting
  • eBook writing
  • Blogging
  • Social media manager

Freelance writing can be very rewarding and offer a lot of opportunities for growth. It can be a great side gig, a full-time job, or something to do while your kids’ nap.

How Do You Become a Freelance Writer?

A long time ago I ditched my Computer Science major and became an English major. Why? I wanted to read books and call it homework. Even I thought it was crazy. It turns out, being able to write well actually makes you pretty darn marketable.

Take a course. If you need to beef up your writing skills, you can take an online class or two (We like this course on Udemy or I would highly recommend this course about jumpstarting your freelance writing career).

Practice your writing skills every day. You can do this by offering free guest posts to blogs (avoid spam sites that don’t offer high-value content). Look for entry-level freelance writing jobs to get some experience and practice your skills.

Once you feel like your skills are up to the task, it’s time to start pitching.

Where to Find Freelance Writing Jobs

Just as there are so many different ways to work as a freelance writer, there are endless places to find them.

When you are first getting started I would focus on entry-level projects. Look for small businesses who need web content or create a basic task on Fivrr. Everything you do will help you build a portfolio and network with potential long-term clients.

If you are looking for immediate cash, content farms such as WritersWork or ContentGather have jobs ready to go, but the downside is it won’t help you much with your resume and the pay is low.

Once you start to establish your freelance writing career, check out these options to help you find freelance writing jobs:

  • Freelance Writing Gigs
  • Problogger Job Board
  • Indeed
  • FlexJobs
  • Look for job postings on popular blogs (preferably ones that you have followed for a while so you are familiar with their style)
  • UpWork
  • Freelancer.com
  • SolidGigs
  • Human Jobs
  • Media Bistro
  • Where to Pitch
  • Behance
  • WritersMarket – This is my favorite resource and one that I find so helpful to have available in print.

Freelance writing can be an amazing work at home job, especially if you need something with flexible hours because you are working from home with young kids or have other commitments.

There are some amazing work at home opportunities out there but you’ll find so many social media accounts promising that you’ll make $10,000 your first month. They use vague terms and aren’t clear how they are doing it. Those people are usually making money selling you courses about making easy money (and most of them aren’t even making what they claim to be).

Look for real work at home opportunities. There’s a lot of them. They won’t make big promises they can’t keep either. If you aren’t already in our Facebook remote jobs group we post real work at home jobs every day. Check out the link in our profile to join or search “The Work at Home Family” on FB.

First of all, you CAN work from home with kids. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been doing it for 19 years now. You do have to be selective about the kind of work you will be doing if you don’t have childcare. If you are hired as a remote hourly employee you will be expected to have childcare. We’ve put together a list of remote jobs that won’t require childcare if that isn’t an option. Check it out in the link on our profile.
