Petsitting can be a great way to earn money from home and is generally something that you can work around your own schedule.

Typically, we think of pet sitting as a job for teens or kids — I certainly loved working as a pet sitter as a teen. I’d never considered it as a way to earn an income from home as an adult until I heard of a friend who was had turned pet sitting into a very profitable side gig.

How did she do it? Using Rover.com.

Rover.com makes it easy to find petsitting clients locally and set your own fee. You can accept multiple dogs at a time, provided your own pets get along well with other cats and dogs.

If you like animals, pet sitting is a very appealing side gig.

My brother tried it at one point and thoroughly enjoyed getting paid to hang out with his own dog (plus a few extras) and watching TV or hanging out in his backyard. It’s definitely a low-stress side gig that is perfect if you already work from home or will be home for a holiday weekend when pet owners are willing to pay extra for pet sitting services.

How to Get Started with Rover.com

To get started, you’ll need to set up an account on Rover.com.

You will need to create a profile. Include as many photos of your family, pets, and home as possible. It will make your profile more appealing to potential pet sitting clients.

Every adult over the age of 18 in the home will need to have a background check run. This typically comes back very quickly and there is no cost involved.

You will need to create a safety plan and show that you have enough experience to understand how to keep pets safe in your home. This includes things like having a plan in place to prevent pets from escaping out of your front door and keeping them safe while they are in your yard. They are pretty flexible and are not looking for the “perfect” pet sitting home. They just want to know that you have a plan in place.

List your Services

Once your profile is complete and your background check has come back, you will need to determine the services you would like to offer and how much you would like to charge.

You can choose to offer:

  • Pet sitting in your home/boarding
  • House sitting
  • Drop-in visits
  • Doggy Day Care
  • Dog Walking
Set your Availability

You have complete flexibility when it comes to the dates you choose to offer services. Set your availability and the number of pets you are open to on each day.

How Much Money Can You Make with Rover.com?

Your income potential with Rover.com depends on so many factors. You set your own rates, but you do need to be competitive with other pet sitters in your area.

You can accept more than one pet at one time, which will obviously increase your profits.

Boarding pets on holiday weekends allows you to increase the rate that you want to charge. Demand is also high so the likelihood of being booked over a holiday is high.

How to Get Repeat Clients with Rover.com

To maximize your earnings, you will want to aim for repeat clients. You can do this by sharing photos of the pets in your care with their owners. Pet owners love receiving updates during the day. Ask for testimonials. The more positive testimonials that you have, the more likely previous clients (and new ones) are to book with you again.

Rover will likely not be a full-time income for you (although I have known people who have turned it into a full-time income) but it can be a great side gig to help you earn some extra money from home.
